Children in lab coats squeezing squishy science creations with colourful beakersConfirmed
Wednesday 23 September 2026

Squeezy Science

Can everyday ingredients become a completely new material?

🧪 Science Discovery — 10am–11am

Mix it. Squeeze it. Stretch it. Discover why it changes!

Using simple everyday materials, children become little chemists and explore how liquids can transform into a completely new, stretchy material.

They will observe, predict, mix and experiment, discovering that the magic they see is actually chemistry. Through an age-appropriate explanation, they'll begin to understand how tiny building blocks called polymers can connect together to create a new texture and new properties.

Rather than simply making something fun to take home, children are encouraged to ask:

“What changed? Why did it change? What happens if we change the ingredients?”

The goal is simple: play with science, but understand what you are observing.

🀄 Mandarin Immersion — 11am–12pm

The second hour connects language naturally to the morning's scientific adventure.

Children begin with familiar routines such as greetings, counting and colours, then discover three new Mandarin words connected directly to their Squeezy Science adventure:

手 — hand

黏 — sticky

可愛 — cute

The words are connected to what children have just experienced: using their hands to squeeze and stretch, discovering a sticky texture, and creating something fun and cute.

Using original picture-and-character cards created specifically for the lesson, children connect each picture with its Mandarin sound and written form, and practise the new vocabulary through repetition, movement, original songs and playful recognition games:

see the card → recognise the word → say it aloud → use it through play.

When appropriate for their age, children also discover one or two simple Chinese characters using a small brush, turning their first encounter with Chinese writing into a playful sensory experience.

“Science gives the words meaning. Mandarin gives the adventure another way to be explored.”

Children exploring static electricity with balloons, a bunny and an aluminium canConfirmed
Wednesday 7 October 2026

Static Magic

Can invisible forces make things move without touching them?

🧪 Science Discovery — 10am–11am

Charge it. Attract it. Make it move — without touching it!

Children explore one of science's most surprising invisible forces: static electricity.

Using balloons and simple everyday objects, our little scientists investigate how an object can attract, move or even lift something without touching it.

They'll experiment through a series of playful challenges: make a paper bunny “dance”, attract tiny pieces of paper, make hair stand up, spin a balanced object and race a can across the table using only static electricity.

Before each challenge, children are encouraged to observe, predict and test:

“Will it move? Which way? Can we make the force stronger? What changes when we try a different material?”

🀄 Mandarin Immersion — 11am–12pm

The science adventure becomes the language adventure.

Children begin with familiar Mandarin routines such as greetings, counting and colours, building confidence through repetition from one session to the next.

Then they discover a few new words connected directly to the morning's Static Magic adventure — for example 兔子 (rabbit), 氣球 (balloon) and 電 (electricity).

Using specially prepared picture cards, children learn to recognise the image, hear the sound, repeat the word and gradually recognise the written character.

Original songs created specifically for the lesson, movement and playful memory games help reinforce the new vocabulary naturally.

Children may also explore the shape of a simple Chinese character through a sensory activity — forming it with modelling clay or tracing it with a small brush — before taking their creation home.

“Science gives the words meaning. Mandarin gives the adventure another way to be explored.”

Children in lab coats exploring capillary action with colourful glasses of water and paper leavesConfirmed
Wednesday 4 November 2026

Rainbow Water Walk

Can water travel, climb and carry colours with it?

🧪 Science Discovery — 10am–11am

Watch it climb. Follow the colour. Build a walking rainbow!

Children explore a fascinating property of water through colourful, hands-on experiments: capillary action.

Using paper towels, coloured water, string and other simple materials, our little scientists investigate how water can travel through tiny spaces in a material — even appearing to “climb” upwards.

They’ll build colourful paper bridges between cups and watch the water slowly travel from one place to another, carrying colour with it and creating new colours along the way.

Through different mini-experiments, children explore questions such as:

“Where is the water going?” “Can water really climb?” “Which material carries water best?” “What happens when two colours meet?”

Along the way, they also discover colour mixing: blue + yellow, red + yellow, and red + blue — making predictions first, then watching the results appear before their eyes.

Children will also explore colour spreading through a playful spraying activity, developing observation skills, hand-eye coordination and fine motor control while watching water move through the material.

🀄 Mandarin Immersion — 11am–12pm

The colours discovered through science now become a playful Mandarin language adventure.

Children begin with familiar Mandarin routines such as greetings and counting, then connect the morning's colourful science adventure to three key Mandarin words:

水 — water

紅 — red

藍 — blue

The vocabulary is connected directly to what children can see and touch: water travelling through the paper, colours moving with it, and different colours meeting and mixing.

Using original picture-and-character cards created specifically for the lesson, children see the picture and the Chinese character together, hear the Mandarin pronunciation and repeat it aloud.

Original songs created for the lesson, movement and playful recognition games strengthen the new vocabulary through repetition:

see it → hear it → say it → recognise it.

Simple sensory character activities may also be included, allowing children to explore the shape of a Chinese character through touch, movement or brushwork.

To finish the adventure, children take part in a colourful Mandarin challenge using rainbow sweets and water. As the colours dissolve and spread, children use the colours they see as another playful opportunity to recognise and say the Mandarin colour vocabulary they have learned.

“Science gives the words meaning. Mandarin gives the adventure another way to be explored.”

Children in lab coats making festive Christmas soaps with colourful moldsConfirmed
Wednesday 2 December 2026

Christmas Soap Lab

Can we turn simple ingredients into our own Christmas creation?

🧪 Science Discovery — 10am–11am

Melt it. Mix it. Make it your own!

In this festive Christmas laboratory, children become little scientists and creators as they transform a ready-made soap base into their own colourful Christmas soap.

The soap-making base is prepared in advance and safely heated by the adult. Children observe what happens as the solid soap base becomes liquid, then discover how it changes again as it cools.

Our little scientists explore a simple but fascinating transformation: solid → warm → liquid → cool → solid again.

Once the soap base is ready, children become the designers. They choose colours, explore fragrances, add decorative touches and carefully combine their ingredients before the mixture is poured into festive Christmas moulds.

While their creations cool, children are encouraged to observe, predict and compare:

“What changed when it became warm?” “What do you think will happen when it cools?” “Is it runny or hard?” “What happens when we mix two colours?” “Which smell did you choose?”

The activity combines scientific observation with sensory exploration, creativity and age-appropriate measuring, mixing and fine-motor skills.

Each child finishes the adventure with a Christmas soap they helped design and can proudly take home.

🀄 Mandarin Immersion — 11am–12pm

The Christmas science laboratory now becomes a festive Mandarin language adventure.

Children begin with their familiar Mandarin routines — greetings, counting and colours — building confidence through repetition from one adventure to the next.

Then they discover a small set of new words connected directly to their Christmas Soap Lab experience, for example:

聖誕節 — Christmas

肥皂 — soap

星星 — star

Using original picture-and-character cards created specifically for the lesson, children connect each picture with its Mandarin sound and written form.

They practise the new vocabulary through movement, playful recognition games and original songs created especially for the lesson.

see it → hear it → say it → recognise it.

Children may also explore a simple Chinese character through a hands-on activity, for example forming its shape with modelling clay or tracing it with a small brush.

Colours, Christmas shapes and the children's own soap creations become natural prompts for using the Mandarin words they have just learned.

The science experience and language experience therefore remain connected from beginning to end.

“Science gives the words meaning. Mandarin gives the adventure another way to be explored.”

Mandarin ROOT Method™ 🇹🇼

A natural way to discover Mandarin.

At Active Brain, children don't start Mandarin by memorizing characters or repeating lists of words. Inspired by how children naturally acquire languages, the Mandarin Discovery Method follows a gentle, progressive journey designed by Dr Sheavon Lee.

  1. 👂
    Step 01

    Listen & Feel the Language

Children first discover Mandarin through sounds, songs, rhythm and daily expressions — allowing the language to become familiar naturally.

  2. 🤲
    Step 02

    Move & Experience

Words are connected with actions and real experiences — eating, washing hands, moving, playing — so meaning is understood through the body, not translation.

  3. 🖼️
    Step 03

    Connect Images & Words

Carefully chosen visual materials help children associate sounds, images and Chinese characters step by step.

  4. 🎵
    Step 04

    Learn Through Music & Stories

Original songs and playful activities reinforce vocabulary and make Mandarin part of their everyday life.

  5. ✏️
    Step 05

    Discover Zhuyin ㄅㄆㄇㄈ

Once children are comfortable with Mandarin sounds, they gradually discover Zhuyin — the Taiwanese phonetic system — helping them read and pronounce characters independently.

Children learn best when they experience, explore and enjoy. 🌱

Dr Sheavon Szu-Hsuan Lee, founder of Active Brain Bordeaux
Meet the founder

Dr. Sheavon Lee — scientist, educator, mum.

Every child begins life as a little scientist: touching, questioning, experimenting and trying to understand the world around them.

As both a scientist and a mother, I have always been fascinated by this natural curiosity. My mission is not only to teach science, but to create a safe and inspiring environment where children feel free to wonder, experiment, make mistakes and discover their own ideas.

Through my PhD in Physical Chemistry with the European Erasmus Mundus programme (University of Bordeaux & TU Darmstadt) and my years of experience sharing science with children in Taiwan and France, I discovered my true passion: helping young minds grow.

Active Brain was created from this vision: a place where science, creativity and languages come together to nurture curious thinkers and confident explorers.

Here, children don't just learn science — curiosity becomes confidence, ideas become creations, and every discovery becomes a step toward loving learning for life.
